The Cincinnati Bengals played against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday, August 8, and suffered a sad defeat: 16-7. The Hall of Fame Game was a tough loss and even brought injury to a beloved player.
Key offensive player, Brian Leonard, had to be taken out of the game when he was unable to put any pressure on his foot. After catching a pass with 26 seconds left in the first half, he was forced to limp off the field because someone had fell back on his heel, compressing his foot. The initial diagnosis was a mid-foot sprain, but he is currently getting more tests. However, Leonard said that it didn’t look good.
Fortunately, this year’s rookies excelled during their first game. New wide receiver Jordan Shipley set up the only touchdown that the Bengals made and defensive tackle Geno Atkins led the team in tackles.
On Sunday, August 15, the Bengals beat the Denver Broncos with a score of 33-24. The Bengals were off to a bad start, trailing 14-0 by the end of the first quarter, but brought it to a tie of 17-17 by halftime. Thanks to a strong defense, the Bengals managed to pull ahead and start the official pre-season with a win.
During the second week of preseason, the Bengals faced the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, August 20. The Bengals' defense proved to be too much for the Eagles and helped to seal a 22-9 victory over Philadelphia.
The Bengals’ opponents for week three will be the Buffalo Bills, who they will play on the road on Saturday, August 28, at 6:30 p.m. To close out the pre-season, the Bengals will face the Indianapolis Colts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 2, in Indy.
Cincinnati fans are hoping for greatness with the addition of wide receiver, Terrell Owens. T.O. and veteran Bengal Chad Ochocinco are long-time friends off the field, and fans hope that being on the same team will hopefully bring positive chemistry and wins to the Bengals' record. Last season, Owens made 55 receptions, 829 yards and five touchdowns; Ochocinco made 72 receptions, 1047 yards and nine touchdowns.
Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga will not be suspended due to his drunk driving arrest in January 2010, but rather will be fined. He must forfeit two paychecks and a portion of his signing bonus-- more than $75,000.
Regular season play for the Bengals begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 12, against the New England Patriots. While, the Bengals are said to have the fourth toughest NFL schedule, behind the Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati's loyal fans have high hopes for this season.
