It’s hard to believe it, but summer is already winding down and soon will be coming to a close. Instead of dreading the end of the season, why not celebrate the beginning of fall (cooler weather, anyone?).
Labor Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate with friends and family. Never done anything special for the holiday? This year is the time for you to get out and do something fun and we have some ideas to get you started. The hard part is choosing which activity to attend!
Riverfest Sunday, September 5.
You don’t have to spend much money to enjoy a great celebration. The Riverfest fireworks are a popular choice for residents of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky each year on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Last year almost half a million people attended the event and is growing each year. If you’re planning to go this year, make sure you arrive with plenty of time before the fireworks show starts (9:05 p.m.), since seats are limited and space becomes full quickly. Attendance is free (except for Newport, where $1 is charged for clean-up costs). Get more info here.
LM&M Railroad Sunday, September 5.
If you want to add an extra-fun element to the Riverfest fireworks, why not enjoy a train ride that will take you to the river? LM&M Railroad offers a Fireworks Train on Sunday, September 5, to transport you to your river destination! The one-hour train ride takes off from Norwood Eagles Train Station and ends at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse. This is a fun solution to avoid parking downtown during the crowded holiday. It’s also fun for children who haven’t ever experienced riding in a real-life train! The cost is $25 per person, but children 2 and under are free. Get the details here.
Ohio Renaissance Festival Saturday, September 4, through Sunday, October 17.
Another tradition that marks the beginning of the fall season is the Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg, Ohio. What’s more fun than feeling like you’ve been transported back in time? At the annual Renaissance Festival, you can walk through a recreated village among themed costumed actors who interact with you! There’s Renaissance games, live shows, shopping, food and more. In celebration of the Labor Day holiday, you can enjoy the Renaissance Festival with a buy one, get one free ticket (September 4, 5 and 6)! This is the perfect way to relax and forget about the worries back home. More details here.
If you’d rather celebrate at home, surrounded by your family and friends, then try one of these fun party ideas:
Have one last BBQ! Nothing says relaxation like firing up the grill for a delicious meal. Decorate your grilling area with red, white and blue paper lanterns and don’t forget the citronella candles to keep away pesky insects! Invite friends to bring fresh fruit you can enjoy before they go out of season.
Head outdoors for a picnic! Don’t spend these last warm days indoors, get some great food, a comfortable blanket and find a gorgeous scenic location to chow down! Whether you go to a local park or stay in your own backyard, picnics are a fun way to make a normal routine special.
