Peter Pilotto design for an “amalgamation” of women.
The design duo, made up of Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, is known for its bright and bold ensembles. Over the years they have gained a big celebrity following, with stars such as Emma Watson and Rihanna sporting their pieces.
Replying to the question on who best exemplifies the brand’s ideal woman, Peter insisted they keep their mind open when designing.
“We have always been told that we appeal to a wide range of women. We have never designed with just one person in mind, but an amalgamation of people we love and admire. So, really, the Peter Pilotto woman could be a range of women,” he told Refinery29.
Earlier this year the pair won the 2014 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund. They beat the likes of House of Holland and Osman to the top spot and their prize included a £200,000 grant.
Christopher is still thrilled by their success and is enjoying building the Peter Pilotto empire using their winnings.
“Winning the BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund was such an incredible moment for us; to have been nominated alongside such talented designers was a true honor,” he smiled. “As we start to apply our winnings to the company – both the financial aspect and the mentoring – over the next year, I think we will really see it evolve.”
Their unique outlook on fashion was demonstrated in their Fall/Winter 14 collection during London Fashion Week in February. Peter continued to explain the inspiration behind their latest offering and how they brought the pieces together.
“We played with contrasts and extremes: the juxtaposition of incorporating sportswear into formal wear and summer elements into winter clothing. We explored intense coloring and the use of different fabrics, textures, and techniques,” he added.
“We find it interesting to use classical techniques such as embroidery in a modern, graphic way. We are always inspired by art, nature, and alternative ways of viewing something familiar.”
