James Franco claims his nude selfie was a “Britney Spears moment”.
The actor surprised his fans by posting a racy picture on Instagram last week, which showed him dressed in a pair of pants, with one hand suspiciously close to the crotch area. He deleted the snap shortly afterwards, but not before it had been seen by many of his followers.
During a stint on the Late Show with David Letterman, the 36-year-old attempted to explain the bold selfie.
“Like that Britney Spears shaved head moment, where it’s sort of like, ‘All right, you want me? Here you can have me, but I am going to be really ugly.’ You know what I mean?” he told the host when queried about his decision.
The audience promptly started laughing, but the star insisted it had been a serious motive.
The Pineapple Express actor has come under fire for his use of social media recently. He used the picture sharing site to contact a 17-year-old girl who he’d had pictures taken with at his Of Mice and Men show on Broadway.
He later texted the teenager and asked if she had a boyfriend and whether he should get a room at the hotel she was staying at. Lucy Clode, who’s from Scotland, responded that she would return when she’s 18.
“I’m embarrassed and I guess I’m just a model of how social media is tricky,” he later lamented the incident.
“It’s the way that people meet each other today, but what I’ve learned – I guess because I’m new to it – is you don’t know who’s on the other end.
“You get a feel for them, you don’t know who you’re talking to.
“I used bad judgement and I learned my lesson.”
