Lily James has recalled an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction she suffered in front of Dame Maggie Smith.
The British star plays Lady Rose MacClare in the smash hit period drama Downton Abbey, and gets to shoot a lot of scenes with the veteran actress.
On one particular occasion the dress she was wearing fell apart, leaving a red-faced Lily to expose her underwear for everyone one set.
“Maggie Smith – one of the greatest actresses that’s ever lived – saw my a**e. I was wearing an antique crepe dress and every time I sat down it ripped; by the end of the day it was just a hole. Maggie was laughing and I was shouting, ‘I’ve got a slip on, it’s not my bum!'” Lily laughed to the British edition of Glamour magazine.
With Downton not due back on TV screens until September, Lily has been busy with other projects.
Kenneth Branagh cast her as the lead in his new movie Cinderella, opposite Game of Thrones hunk Richard Madden.
While Lily loved the filming process, she was once again subject to uncomfortable wardrobe choices.
“My corset was so tight I could only have liquid food – torture- and then I nearly set my hand-painted, silk wedding dress alight on a heater,” she said.
However, her handsome co-star softened the blow slightly.
“I can’t think of a better Prince Charming. He’s beautiful; he looks like those old movie stars,” she gushed.
The 25-year-old actress is already preparing herself for the release of Cinderella, which hits cinema screens early next year, and the next level of fame it will bring.
“I’m not on Twitter and when I’m not in character as Rose, I don’t look much like her. When Cinderella comes out I’m going to dye my hair back to my natural brown. I really don’t want that kind of fame where everyone knows who I am,” she explained.
