Palin calls Newsweek cover 'sexist'

Sarah Palin

CNN's Political Ticker blog has a post about how disappointed Sarah Palin is with the cover on which she appears.

"The choice of photo for the cover of this week's Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this 'news' magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant," Palin wrote. "The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist, and oh-so-expected by now."

"If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention – even if out of context," Palin also said.

And check out the text that accompanies the cover photo ... I'd imagine she probably had a problem with that too :)

New study about workplace gossip

workplace gossip

Saw this AP story about a study researchers at Indiana University did related to the dynamics of workplace gossip.

The team studied workplace politics at an elementary school during an uncomfortable transition after a new principal took over.

School staff meetings and episodes of gossip were videotaped. What they found was those who are targets of gossip are negatively evaluated during formal work meetings - including veiling criticism with sarcasm or praising another colleague for comparison.

Another finding: Gossip can undermine those who aren't present, but it can also enhance someone's reputation if people talk positively about them behind their back.

Desserich family

"Notes Left Behind" - a book made from notes and letters Elena Desserich left around her house for family members - is now in bookstores nationwide, and her family is celebrating the release at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Rookwood Tuesday evening.

Desserich, who lived in Wyoming, passed away in August of 2007 when she was 6. She had inoperable brain cancer.

Her parents, Keith and Brooke, made a book from the letters she wrote.

This ABC News story offers more background.

Harper Collins says it sold more than 150,000 pre-sale copies of the book.

Proceeds of the book go to The Cure Starts Now.

Also, a book signing will take place Thursday (Oct. 29) at 7 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble on Montgomery Road in Kenwood.

Check out this story from the Baltimore Sun.

An off-duty Baltimore police officer pulled his gun and pointed it at an actor portraying the killer in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" during a performance at a mall.

The 36-year-old officer is charged with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

From the story:

"I've never had anything like this happen to me," said Michael Brian Morrison, a 32-year-old contractor who helps run the privately owned haunted house and played the part of "Leatherface."
