Ohio's new booster seat law, which went into effect six months ago, will be enforced with fines starting Wednesday. Until now, drivers violating the law have been issued warnings.
The law requires children 4, 5, 6 or 7 years old who weigh more than 40 pounds and who are less than 4-feet-9 inches tall to be in a federally approved booster seat that works with a seat belt.
The booster seat elevates a child in the back seat of a car so that the seat belt fits properly. The booster positions the lap belt so it rests on the child's hips, rather than on the soft tissue around the belly button. The booster also ensures that the shoulder belt comes across the shoulder, rather than cuts into the child's neck.
Ohio law says children age 3 and younger who weigh less than 40 pounds must be in a child-safety seat. Children ages 8 to 15 who are not in a booster seat must wear a seat belt.
