A 0 million cash-for-clunkers-type federal program to boost sales of energy-efficient home appliances may be on the way soon.

The program authorizes rebates of to 0 for purchases of high-efficiency household appliances. The money is part of the broader economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year. Program details will vary by state, and the Energy Dept. has set a deadline of Thursday, Oct. 15 for states to file formal applications. The Energy Dept. expects the bulk of the 0 million to be awarded by the end of November. (Unlike the clunkers auto program, consumers won't have to trade in their old appliances.)

"These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement announcing the plan. Only appliances covered by the Energy Star seal will qualify. In 2008, about 55% of newly produced major household appliances met those standards, which are set by the Energy Dept. and Environmental Protection Agency.

The Lockland police officer critically injured earlier this year when a West Chester police vehicle accidentally struck him during a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 75 has completely recovered and returns to full duty tonight, a police spokesman said.
Brandon Gehring, 23, couldn't work for several months after he was hit April 20 on southbound Interstate 75 near Shepherd Lane. He underwent lengthy stays at University Hospital and the Drake Center.
About a month ago, he began working light desk duty part-time and he has completed outpatient rehabilitation at Drake, said Lt. Terry Wilkerson, spokesman for Lockland police.
“He’s been here two days a week and then at two days of therapy,” Wilkerson said Monday. “But tonight he comes back to full duty. He is recovered. I think he is looking pretty forward to it … I think he is pretty excited to get back to work. That is something he really wanted to accomplish.”
Gehring nearly died when a speeding robbery suspect fled West Chester police, and a West Chester police sport utility vehicle accidentally struck him during the pursuit. At the time, Gehring was trying to help stop the fleeing vehicle by preparing to lay down so-called “stop sticks” on the highway.
