Originally known as Decoration Day, it was first observed on May 30, 1868 as a day to set aside and honor the nation’s Civil War causalities by decorating their graves with flowers and flags.

The last Monday of May was chosen to coincide with the time when flowers would be blooming all over the country. While it was created in hopes of the whole country recognizing the holiday, New York was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day. It wasn’t until 1971 that Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday.

When Lopez appeared on "Ellen" with co-star Cameron Diaz to promote her upcoming movie, "What to Expect When You're Expecting," Lopez said she's had a blast during two seasons on "Idol," but her time may be up.

"Now this is my second year -- I don't know if I can go for a third year,” said Lopez. “I miss doing other things. It really does lock you down, which was nice the first year with the babies being three, but now they're getting more mobile, they're about to go into school ... So I just don't know."
