There’s something really cool coming to town and I’m very excited to be a part of it.  It’s the Cincinnati Reel Abilities Film Festival March 9-16, the largest national film festival dedicated to sharing the lives, stories and art of people with disabilities.

Each night, there’s a different movie featuring different disabilies including Autism, Downs Syndrome, War Veterans and more.  And each night benefits a different local charity.  I’ll be hitting several of them…two are films about Autsim.  Monday night’s movie is “Ocean Heaven” at Kenwood Theater and it benefits the Autism Society of Greater Cincinnati.  The trailer is at the link below…check it out!

What I really love about this festival is that is reflects my own belief that each and every one of us is different.  And the sooner we all can learn to accept other’s differences as well as our own, the happier we all will be.  And isn’t that really what all of us want anyway…to be accepted for who we are?

This festival has so much heart.  I hope to see you there!

International Baccalaureate Students Rally To Save Program That Saved Them

Covington,KY– A group of International Baccalaureate (IB) Students has rallied around current students at Covington Independent Public Schools to help save the IB program that saved them. Holmes High Schools principal, David Maines, proposed a plan to phase out the program and divert the funds to allow students to attend Gateway Community College for credit.

Former graduates and many teachers don’t feel like this is a wise choice since Gateway credits are often difficult to transfer to other colleges and they have only been “accredited” for the last four years. The IB program has been around for over thirty years with a proven track record of producing students coming out of Covington Independent Schools who went on to attend Yale, Stanford, and many other prestigious universities.

Among the graduates who provided letters of support; two work for the Obama administration, one is working as an AP journalist in Afghanistan, one holds a double PhD/MD from John’s Hopkins University and currently owns his own pharmaceutical company, another is a researcher for Children’s Hospital….their list of accomplishments is vast and impressive. Many of these former students will be present at tonight’s school board meeting and in attendance at the site based meeting on January 29, 2013 where they will have the second reading of the policy change.

These graduates feel if the IB program is eliminated that it will limit the opportunities for future generations of Covington Independent Public School children and may be in direct conflict with some of Kentucky’s educational statutes.

Eighty-One percent of Covington Independent Public School children are living below poverty level. These lower income and minority students will not have the same opportunities to dream a bigger dream if the IB program is eliminated.

For additional information, please see the attached document that contains statistics and personal stories from IB graduates about how the program impacted and in some cases saved their lives.

Give Back.

(Cincinnati, OH) Novmeber 27th, 2012 – Today, CancerFree Kids’ sendCOURAGE.org website goes live and “Courage” the lion and other products officially go on sale. For just $20, “Courage” the lion is sent with a personalized note to someone who could use a little courage. In addition, for each lion ordered, CancerFree Kids will give another lion to a child recently diagnosed with cancer. All proceeds benefit CancerFree Kids Pediatric Cancer Research Alliance.

“Courage” the lion was created originally in 2004 by CancerFree Kids and is now one of the many items they provide to recently diagnosed children with cancer. After originally launching “Courage” for kids with cancer, they quickly realized everyone needs courage to face life’s many challenges and began offering the for purchase on their website.

“With the announcement of “Giving Tuesday,” (a grassroots effort that is launching the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year to encourage people to give back to their communities) there is no better time than the holidays to launch our sendCOURAGE campaign,” says Ellen Flannery Founder and Executirve Director of CancerFree Kids.

Everyone can use a little extra courage from time to time. Here are just a few reasons people send “COURAGE”:
To show suport for a child or adult going through an illness
To support a grieving friend
To support a friend who has lost a job
To suport a friend going through a divorce
To support someone who is moving far from home
To support our military men and women away at war
To encourage a friend taking on one of many of life’s challenges

During the course of their 27 year marriage, Dave & Debbie Schwemberger have seen enough hardships to last a lifetime. Born with a tumor on her spine called Lipoma, Debbie struggled with health issues her entire life. Starting at the young age of 14 the surgeries ensue, totaling more than 30 surgeries to date, ultimately resulting in the amputation of both of her legs below the knee and a second total hip replacement in December 2012. Debbie now uses her experience to work part time as a patient advocate at a prosthetics facility.
Through it all, her husband Dave has been the strength for Debbie, and their two children, Amber & Chris. Dave has always been a hardworking, vigilant husband & father. After losing his job at the Pella plant in Fairfield, when they closed the doors, Dave continued to do what he could to provide for his family.
The devastation does not subside. This past October, Dave was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Braving months of radiation treatment, chemo & surgeries to treat the cancer and the tumors that have spread to his brain, the medical bills are rapidly piling up. With no health insurance following the loss of his job, the Schwemberger family is now asking for help from family, friends & local businesses.
Donations of monetary value, gift cards, or items/baskets to be auctioned at the benefit would ensure a less exasperating struggle. Please contact schwemberger91385@yahoo.com, or Sarah Ruthven at Lukymunky82@gmail.com.
Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness!

There will also be a benefit Saturday, January 19th 2013

Meet World-Renowned Jewelry Designer Marco Bicego at James Free Jewelers in Montgomery, Nov. 16

One of the biggest “rock stars” in the jewelry world is coming to Cincinnati on Friday, November 16, and you can meet him in person. Marco Bicego will mingle with fans and introduce new designs in a rare public appearance at James Free Jewelers in Montgomery from 4:00-8:00 p.m. He will even personally autograph each piece of his jewelry, using a special engraver. However, no purchase is necessary to meet Mr. Bicego.

Marco Bicego is known for exquisite, multi-textured designs inspired by nature and different cultures. Characteristic features of his designs are exclusive hand-woven coil strands and hand-etched satin finishes.

“All my creations must be manipulated by hand in order for them to preserve a unique and luxurious experience,” he says.

“Italian designers have long set the tone for what’s hot in the jewelry industry, and Marco Bicego is one of that country’s leading names,” says Michael Karaman, president of James Free Jewelers. “It is no exaggeration to say that each of Marco’s designs is a collector’s item.”

James Free Jewelers is located at 9555 Main Street, Montgomery, Ohio 45242. For more information, call (513) 793-0133 or visit www.jamesfree.com.

Immediately following the workshop will be an AMAZING staff show free to the public from 3:30-4:30, where our awesome jump instructors will show off their best skipping tricks and routines. I invite all of you to come out and watch this incredible show so you can see just what I am talking about. These jumpers do the most amazing and jaw-dropping stunts. I am Mason Elam from Madeira High School and I am part of the Entrepreneurship class and our group name is MVP Industries. We have to raise money for a Foundation and we chose the Moebius Syndrome Foundation since one girl in our group has a little sister with this disease. We are hosting a walk to raise money and here are the details:
• Nov. 3rd
• 9am to 10:30 am
• Starts at Madeira Middle School and will loop back around from the Madeira High School (2.2 miles)
• We will be selling Moebius Shirts
• Hot Chocolate and other goods will be available
It would be awesome if you could help us advertise for this event. We really would like the whole Cincinnati area to get involved somehow. The disease is really rare. The disease (Moebius) causes children to be born with facial paralysis so they cannot blink, move their eyes laterally, smile or show facial expression. It also causes autism and clubbed feet. We have two locals within Madeira who have this deformity and we want to raise awareness. I would be so thrilled if you could help us out. Our goal is to have over 500 people attend. We would like to have maybe a few of you guys at the Madeira Middle School before the walk starts, possibly playing music while people register, and as it gets started.
